Delaware Stories

Hugh Thornton, Dover

HUGH THORNTON
(Nominated by Beth McGinn)
Dover Fire Department Headquarters
June 16, 2011

Hugh is an active member of the Honor Guard of the American Legion Post 28 in Millsboro, DE.  While working as a NY Building Inspector, he was at Ground Zero and trapped.  While waiting to be rescued, one of the dogs stayed by his side licking his hand until the crews dug him out. Sam and Hugh became so attached that he was given the Dalmatian dog he has now had for 10 years.  Sam is now 12 years old and Hugh’s constant companion. Sam is also an honorary member of Post 28’s honor guard.  On July 16th the American Legion Post 28 will be hosting the 9/11 fire truck which will be escorted from the Cape May-Lewes Ferry by the 28 Legion Riders to the Post for a ceremony that will include Hugh and Sam.  I believe that Hugh should have the privilege and honor of stitching the 9/11 flag.
