W. Chris Mertz, my husband, is a Fire Fighter for Rancho Santa Fe Fire in the county of San Diego. He is also a part of USAR Task Force 8, San Diego and was part of one of the first Urban Search and Rescue teams to reach New York and help search Ground Zero. He was there for 10 days searching through the wreckage and debris desperately looking for his New York brothers and worked tirelessly alongside many others who vowed to bring their brothers home. That day profoundly affected his life as a Fire Fighter and a family man. It changed the way we as a family do things and view life. The idea of being able to put a healing stitch into the 9/11 flag is indescribable.
