Winnie Fankhauser started quilting at the age of 6 when she begged her grandmother in Arkansas to let the quilt down from the ceiling so she could stitch.

Her family moved from Arkansas to Belvidere when she was 12. She graduated from Haviland High School. In 1937 she married Lloyd Fankhauser and both worked for the Post Office in Haviland for many years.

Winnie was asked by Steve Dawson to examine the National 911 Flag when it was first brought to Greensburg by Charlie Vitchers. Winnie’s determination leads others to believe that the Flag could be repaired back to being Ol’ Glory.

Placing the stitch for Winnie is her daughter Sharon.
