Don served in the U.S. Coast Guard from January 1951 to January 1954.  After a few weeks in boot camp he went in to six months of rigorous physical commando training.  The Coast Guard did not receive appropriation to finish that training and his company was disbanded.  Don was then transferred to a ship in Philadelphia as a seaman.  Although he was “just a seaman”, as Don says, he was in charge of ordering all of the food to feed over 600 men that were on board.  Later, Don was summoned to the 4th Naval District headquarters and offered a position in the Pay and Supply Office.  Don was blessed and honored to have served in this office as it had the highest efficiency in the Coast Guard.
