Bret Woolhether, Fond du Lac

BRET WOOLHETHER
(Nominated by Patricia Bartels)
Marian University Campus
October 23, 2010

Bret joined the Marine Corps after he graduated from high school and served in both Afghanistan and Iraq. As a Marine, he was among the first invading forces to enter Nazaria. In March 2003, he was shot in the hand while on patrol in Nasiriyah and was awarded the Purple Heart. Bret was the first veteran from Wisconsin wounded in the Gulf War.  Previously an accomplished carpenter, when he returned home still recovering from the wound in his hand, he volunteered to help my husband and me remodel the American Legion Post 75 in Fond du Lac, in dire need of repairs. He did this because he felt the American Legion building needed to be preserved for service to the veterans of Fond du Lac. Bret has also participated in the Veterans Day “salute to veterans” for school children and told them about both countries in which he served. He is always ready to help someone in need. He is our hero! Thank you for considering him.
