Tobie Sommers, Tucson

TOBIE SOMMERS
(Nominated by Irena King)
Centennial Hall, University of Arizona
July 8, 2011

Tobie was stationed at the Pentagon on September 11, serving in the United States Navy. She lost many close friends in the attack. After September 11 she was called to perform her collateral duty in ASF where she had to guard Bowling Air Force Base in DC and in helping after the disaster. She also served and commissioned on the USS Ronald Reagan and Naval Space command. She is a disabled veteran and left the military in 2005 to raise her children and follow her husband who is currently serving in the United States Air Force at Luke AFB in Glendale, AZ as an air traffic controller. Tobie is currently finishing her BA to become an elementary school teacher. She has two small boys, is active in the community and military groups and still manages to hold a 4.0 GPA. She is in the Kappa Delta Phi teachers’ honor society and volunteers in the local schools. Sept 11 is always a hard day for her and I know she would be honored to take place in the stitching of the flag.
