Nick Popaditch, San Diego

(Nominated by Cheryl Perez)
March 13, 2011

Gunny Sgt. Nick Popadtich, retired Marine and recipient of the Silver Star and Purple Heart, served in the Gulf War and the Iraqi War.  He is pictured in the world famous AP photo of the statue of Saddam coming down. He was hit in the head with RPG as he was in the lead tank in the battle of Fallujah. Now, after the loss of one eye and legally blind in the other, he continues to be a local hero and has become a beloved speaker at many events.  When he talks about the brave men and women with whom he served and what we are really doing overseas, you can not help but feel proud and grateful to our soldiers.
