As pioneer residents of the Coachella Valley, she as a teacher and he as a business developer, BJ and Dan Callahan were heavily involved in their community. BJ was named “Teacher of the Year” for the Desert Sands Unified School District and also for Riverside County. After her retirement from teaching, she and Dan helped found the Mini-Muster program to teach fire prevention and safety to children. Dan served as President of the Palm Desert Historical Society and the Indian Wells Historic Preservation Society. Together they received the Indian Wells Inspirational Citizens of the 1990’s award, the Palm Desert Founders Award and Volunteer of the Year award from Palm Desert.
