Kerry was a first responding New York City police officer at the World Trade Center on September 11, 2001, survived the disaster and rendered aid to the injured. He worked for the ensuing months at Staten Island landfill and the World Trade Center sorting debris for evidence and remains.  He was then surrounded by jet fuel and flames as he tried to assist following the Far Rockaway, Queens airplane crash in November 2001.  He retired from the NYPD in 2002 and moved to Florida. He was hired to work for the Gulf Breeze Police Department in 2005. He responded to Hurricane Dennis in Gulf Breeze where the category 3 hurricane made a direct hit and then to Hurricane Katrina in Biloxi, Mississippi to aid them when their police department was severely damaged.
